For whom is the course?

It is suitable for beginners and advanced who would like to learn how to handle oil paints practically.

What do I learn in this course?

First of all, let’s briefly explain what a cast is. We have simply adopted the word in a short manner here. A Plaster cast is a plaster sculpture. In the academy, we simply speak of Casts. The casts we use are either masks such as the face of a woman or a child, or only facial abstracts such as the eye part, nose or a single lying hand. To work from a cast is particularly suitable for an easy entry into oil painting. The cast is white. When placed against a black background, the painting focuses on black and white and its values. We are talking about Grisaille and therefor working with a limited palette. This gives the participants more time to focus on mixing the ideal tonalities as well as the correct proportions.

How is the process?

In this workshop we will start with the composition. Which objects or cast do you want to use. What will be the best set-up and how can you illuminate to create an interesting compostion. It feels a little bit like arrangement of the best set-up for a theater stage and will need some time.

When everything is done, a drawing is started which is then transferred to the canvas. Participants will learn methods of measurement like sight-size and how to create forms by using light and shadows.

What do I have to bring?

I had a lot of fun. Even if it's a lot of hard-working and concentration, in the end of the day you are proud to have created a small artwork. I'm really looking forward to the next workshop!
